ecoSPIRITS Welcomes SVP and Bolsters Customer Resources for the Circular Economy Transition

LONDON 05 March 2024 ecoSPIRITS has welcomed a new global head of sales and customer success, while also making a number of other appointments to bolster its customer support resourcing. James Doyle has joined the company in the role of Senior Vice President, Sales & Customer Success, with responsibility for all sales and customer implementation matters. Marco Lam has also been appointed to the role of Vice President, Value Engineering, overseeing a new internal consulting team supporting customers with a range of commercial planning, financial analysis and circular economy expertise. The new resources come as ecoSPIRITS works more closely with a growing base of global customers on the complex circular economy transition in premium spirits and wine.

The expanded customer success team is based in London, with regional resourcing in Asia Pacific and North America.

ecoSPIRITS’ new customer success team, which is responsible for sales, account management and project management, is based in London, with regional teams in Asia Pacific and North America. Led by James Doyle, the new team is supporting ecoSPIRITS’ brand, distributor and outlet partners around the world as they integrate ecoSPIRITS’ circular packaging technologies – ecoPLANT™, ecoTOTE™, SmartPour™, SmartKioskTM and CircularONE™ – into their local, regional and global supply chains.

The ecoSPIRITS technology is now available in more than 27 countries across Asia Pacific, Europe and the Americas.

James Doyle joins ecoSPIRITS as Senior Vice President, Sales & Customer Success. He brings more than 20 years’ worth of experience in working with technology businesses on a global basis and played a leading role in building the EMEA Enterprise business at Tata Communications followed by Senior Sales Leadership roles in start up software companies, such as SightCall and CareAR. He has extensive experience in sales leadership roles, building growth platforms across sales and customer success, built on trusted relationships with customers, partners and employees. At ecoSPIRITS, he is responsible for overseeing the company’s worldwide portfolio of customer relationships. Working closely with ecoSPIRITS CEO, Paul Gabie and the executive leadership team, Doyle’s mandate is to build and manage high performing sales, account and project management teams.

James Doyle, Senior Vice President, Sales & Customer Success, ecoSPIRITS

“ecoSPIRITS has grown at pace since the business was founded in 2018 and we are now in the process of scaling globally. New and existing team members are all geared up to support our partners as they look to expand into new territories, deploy brands in ecoTOTE for the first time, or set up new collaborations with us. I am delighted to be joining at this important stage of growth for the business and can’t wait to celebrate more circular economy successes with our customers in 2024 and beyond.”

As part of its investment in expanded customer success resources, ecoSPIRITS has also launched an internal consulting team dedicated to Value Engineering, with a focus on refining circular packaging economics, enhancing their cost-effectiveness and maximising commercial value to customers and partners. The new team works particularly closely with ecoSPIRITS’ largest customers, where the integration of circular economy activities into their global supply chains requires innovation in commercial and financial analysis and practices. This team is led by Marco Lam in his new role as Vice President, Value Engineering. Lam originally joined ecoSPIRITS in 2022 as Commercial Planning Director.

Marco Lam, Vice President, Value Engineering, ecoSPIRITS

“I am looking forward to working closely with James to help support his team’s work with some of our largest customers. Value engineering is a great asset for our customers because it is a process that can help solve problems, reduce costs and ensure a project is completed within a budget, while also maintaining – or even improving – financial performance along the way.”

ecoSPIRITS x Diageo: Dedicated To Success

In November 2023, Diageo and ecoSPIRITS announced a global agreement for the distribution of a range of Diageo spirits brands in ecoSPIRITS’ circular packaging technology in an expected 18 markets over the next three years. To support these technology deployments, ecoSPIRITS is fielding two new customer success resources dedicated to supporting the scaleup of circular packaging in Diageo’s global supply chain. Jack Davis, who joins ecoSPIRITS as Global Customer Success Manager, comes across from Diageo, where his most recent role was a Senior Commercialisation Manager for Continental Europe & MENA. Isaac Powell has also joined ecoSPIRITS to support Diageo as a Global Technical Lead, coming from East London craft distillery, Jim and Tonic Ltd, where he led the distilling team.

Jack Davis, Global Customer Success Mgr., ecoSPIRITS

Smirnoff vodka, Gordon’s gin and Captain Morgan rum are the first Diageo brands to be deployed in ecoTOTE format.

The new customer resource appointments come at a time when ecoSPIRITS and its customers are navigating the complex linear to circular transition required to bring closed loop packaging to global scale. This is a transition that offers the prospect of dramatic sustainability impact, yet poses a host of challenges, particularly within the context of global supply chains. By bringing together a deep bench of customer success, project management, consulting, engineering and supply chain expertise, ecoSPIRITS is positioned to help its customers rapidly plan, deploy and scale their circular economy initiatives.

Paul Gabie, CEO, ecoSPIRITS

“I am delighted to welcome James to ecoSPIRITS and to congratulate Marco on his new appointment. The linear to circular transition is both incredibly rewarding, delivering dramatic sustainability outcomes, and also exceedingly complex at the same time. This is why we are bringing together such a broad range of expertise and resources. I am confident these new appointments will help ensure our customers can navigate the circular economy transition successfully and at global scale.”

ecoSPIRITS to Launch in Spain with Wine and Spirits Group, Escolà

BARCELONA 1 February 2024 ecoSPIRITS has announced plans to launch closed loop service in Spain under a Licensed Operator Agreement with a new company created by Francesc Escolà, CEO of Spanish wine and spirits distribution group, Ecosistema Escolà (‘Escola’). ecoSPIRITS Spain will start its activity in the Spanish market from this month, starting with three spirits in ecoTOTE™ format. These will be deployed from the country’s first ecoPLANT™, which will be hosted by the Barcelona-based spirits producer, Bardinet-España. Distribution will initially commence in the Spanish region of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands and will quickly expand to the rest of Spain and Andorra. The move into Spain builds on ecoSPIRITS’ rapidly expanding European footprint, following recently announced partnerships with new Licensed Operators in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Italy.

GinRaw, Planteray Rum and Avallen will be the first spirits available in ecoTOTE format in Spain.

Escolà has a history dating back to 1962 when the Escolà family found success in Barcelona; initially with grocery shops and later, in 1973, moving into wine and spirits distribution. Today, the company has more than 90 employees and more than 5,000 products, marketed under two different distribution divisions.

Also in Barcelona, the company runs Magatzem Escolà, an impressive space which serves as its training centre and showroom. The building, which dates back to 1890, was carefully restored by the company in 2011 and retains many of the original architectural elements.

Magatzem Escolà is located in Barcelona and is used as the company’s showroom and training centre.

Spain has been earmarked as a world leader in tourism competitiveness for the third consecutive year (World Economic Forum) and it recently launched its 2030 Sustainable Tourism Strategy, which will help it to maintain its global leadership. Barcelona has long been known as a capital of gastronomy and the city is home to at least 26 Michelin starred restaurants. In addition, its cocktail scene is now thriving, with the city having recently enjoyed an influx of bar talent from overseas. Barcelona is one of the country’s top tourist destinations and in 2022 it saw 12.4 million tourists.

Barcelona is known for is gastronomy and it has a thriving cocktail scene, with an array of unique bars such as La Textil (pictured centre).

Spain also has ambitious waste reduction targets. In December 2022, the country issued its Royal Decree 1055/2022 on Packaging and Packaging Waste, which seeks to align Spain’s packaging legislation with the new extended producer responsibility scheme set in place by the European Union. It also sets in place a series of measures for producers for both the marketing of their products and management of their waste. The main purpose of this new Decree is to make all packaging on the market recyclable by 2030 and, where possible, reusable.

Three bars in the top 20 of The World’s 50 Best Bars 2023 – Sips, Paradiso, and Salmon Guru – have already signed up to take delivery of spirits in ecoTOTE format. In addition to this, the luxury hotel chains Marugal and Pulitzer have also joined as early launch partners for Spain. Marugal specializes in the conception, launch and operation of unique premium hotel properties and it is the company behind some of the best luxury boutique hotels in Spain. Pulitzer Hotels is a family-run business born in Barcelona in 1967. Its unique hotels are designed to be warm and welcoming, with a focus on sustainability.

Sips, Barcelona

The Barcelona-based Sips offers high quality drinks in a welcoming environment. The bar secured the title of Best Bar in the World in 2023, an impressive achievement considering the concept – by leading names from the bar world, Marc Álvarez and Simone Caporale – was only brought to life in 2021.

Paradiso, Barcelona

Also in Barcelona is Paradiso, ranked at number four in the World’s 50 Best Bars 2023 (and first in 2022). This cocktail bar, led by cocktail guru, Giacomo Giannotti, often has queues down the street. The bar boasts a beautifully sculpted Dali-esque curved wooden bar, as well as an impressive list of cocktails.

Salmon Guru

And Madrid’s Salmon Guru, ranked at number 16, has also signed up as an early adopter of the ecoSPIRITS system. This forward-thinking bar, headed up by well-known industry figure, Diego Cabrera, is known for its big flavours and impeccable service.

The first brands to be available for the Spanish market will be Planteray Rum (formerly known as Plantation Rum), Ginraw and Avallen.

Planteray Rum

This brand is part of the Maison Ferrand portfolio. The rums in the Planteray collection are described as “authentic spirits that express the individual terroirs that made them,” and they are made from rums sourced in the Caribbean, predominantly Barbados and Jamaica.

GinRaw

GinRaw comes from Barcelona and was created by a pair of entrepreneurs, with the help of four masters in their craft: a chef, a sommelier, a mixologist and a perfumer. The team use low-temperature distillation to preserve the flavours and aromas of their botanicals, which include kaffir lime leaves, cardamom, and laurel.

Avallen

This calvados is a planet-positive spirit made from apples. Avallen is crisp, floral and completely natural with no added sugar or caramel. It is frequently mixed with soda as a refreshing spritz or used in cocktails. The company is Certified B Corp and its charitable partner in the UK is the Bumblebee Conservation Trust (BBCT).

The Barcelona-based Bardinet-España has been selected as the host company for ecoPLANT No. 036, which will be Spain’s first ecoPLANT. Bardinet-España is part of the French group La Martiniquaise-Bardinet, based in Paris, which has a wide portfolio of different spirits brands. The parent company, which has a history dating back to 1857, is one of the world’s top ten spirits producers with 29 subsidiaries and manufacturing plants in Spain, France, UK, Portugal and the Netherlands. The ecoPLANT for Spain is a 2.0W model, capable of processing both spirits and wine. It will be hosted in a dedicated production and warehouse facility to be operated by Bardinet-España staff, who will be trained and supported by ecoSPIRITS’ global Closed Loop Operations team.

Francesc Escola, CEO of Ecosistema Escolà

“We are very pleased with this agreement that will enable ecoSPIRITS to arrive in Spain and which will help our country to reduce single-use glass waste. By transitioning to circular packaging technology we will see a significant saving in waste and a 60 to 90% reduction in the carbon emissions footprint of premium spirits packaging and distribution.”

Iain McPherson, Sales Director, EMEA, ecoSPIRITS

“Spain is a key market for us and we are confident that our new Licensed Operator for Spain has the right experience, network and passion to champion ecoSPIRITS’ closed loop packaging system across the region. Spanish consumers are highly committed to sustainable measures and we believe many on-trade venues will be keen to offer – and shout about – low waste drinks on their cocktail menus.”

Spain will also participate in the ecoSPIRITS Forest Program, planting one tree for every cycle of an ecoTOTE delivered to hospitality venues. ecoSPIRITS and Green Steps Group Expand ecoSPIRITS Oceans Program

ZANZIBAR 28 December 2023 ecoSPIRITS has extended its partnership with eco-tech sustainability and nature-based solutions pioneer, Green Steps Group, to expand the ecoSPIRITS Oceans Program. This initiative, which was first announced in July 2021, is aimed at island nations most at risk from rising sea levels due to climate change. Venues in these island nations are now taking delivery of spirits in special blue Ocean Conservation Edition ecoTOTE™ 3.0S. The ecoSPIRITS Oceans Program complements the ecoSPIRITS Forest Program, first introduced in May 2020 to further offset the carbon impact of beverage operations at leading hotels, bars, and restaurants across the world. The impact programs allow ecoSPIRITS and its partner venues, spirit brands and distributors to deepen their commitment to sustainability and positive environmental impact for the beverage industry.

Several brands are being deployed in blue Ocean Conservation Edition ecoTOTEs including: Lazy Dodo Rum (Mauritius); Candela Mamajuana (Dominican Republic); Goslings (Bermuda); FAIR Kumquat Liqueur (Cayman Islands); and Takamaka Rum (Seychelles).

Each order of an ecoTOTE placed by venue partners in participating island nations funds the removal of one kilogram of single use plastic, glass, and other man-made waste from endangered marine environments. The Oceans Program – complemented by the striking blue Ocean Conservation Edition ecoTOTE – has been established to draw attention to ocean pollution and the impact that CO2 emissions are having on sea levels, and the severe threat these issues pose to human and animal life on island nations worldwide. Using Green Steps Group’s proprietary “proof of impact” technology platform, recovered ocean waste is photographed, weighed, and logged for each venue with real-time map visibility.

Ocean waste is photographed, weighed and logged for each venue.

Green Steps Group’s climate-tech platform helps ecoSPIRITS and its partner brands and venues assess their environmental impact. The unique online platform verifies that each and every tree is planted and that every kilogram of plastic recovered from the ocean is measured and tracked. The system displays impact information in geo-tagged map format, allowing venues to share their impact progress with their target audiences. As part of the partnership, Green Steps Group has created customised ‘Impact Dashboards’ for the two ecoSPIRITS impact programs.

Green Steps Group’s unique eco-tech platform includes a geo-tagged, map-based display interface.

The ecoSPIRITS Oceans Program’s beach cleanups currently take place in Zanzibar, an island archipelago off the coast of Tanzania in East Africa. Working with local village cooperatives, the ecoSPIRITS Oceans Program offers meaningful employment opportunities to residents of low-income areas, creating social uplift and environmental regeneration. Through regular clean-up initiatives, the local community benefits from consistent remuneration and training on conservatorship of natural resources. The program may be extended to include other clean-up locations soon.

The ecoSPIRITS Oceans Program offers employment opportunities to local communities.

Bermuda was the first island nation to participate in the ecoSPIRITS Oceans Program, and the first to deploy the blue Ocean Conservation Edition ecoTOTEs. ecoSPIRITS Bermuda is managed by Licensed Operator, Bermuda Gin Co, founded by Roy Fellowes and family. Many hospitality venues in Bermuda are now taking delivery of spirits – such as Bermuda Gin Co’s White Roof Gin – in ecoTOTE format and are signed up to the ecoSPIRITS Oceans Program. This has led to the recovery of almost two tonnes of ocean waste in the first 18 months.

Bermuda was the first island nation to participate in the Program.

Roy Fellowes, Founder of Bermuda Gin Co

“We would like to thank the many Bermuda hospitality venues who embraced the ecoSPIRITS mission to eliminate single use glass bottles and are now receiving spirits in the beautiful blue Ocean Conservation Edition ecoTOTEs. Together we are reducing carbon emissions and packaging waste in the distribution of spirits and removing plastic, glass and other man-made waste from ocean waters. A sincere thanks also to Goslings, who agreed to put their delicious rums into the circular ecoTOTE format and work with us on ecoSPIRITS Bermuda operations.”

Other ecoSPIRITS island markets now taking deployment of Ocean Conservation Edition ecoTOTEs now include the Seychelles, the Dominican Republic, the Cayman Islands, and Mauritius. These island nations are also at risk from rising sea levels and climate change, with some now emerging as world leaders in protecting land and waters for threatened species. The Seychelles, for example, has now designated 42% of its territory for conservation. In total, venues in these island nations that are part of the ecoSPIRITS Oceans Program have helped with the recovery of more than 7,000 kg of ocean waste to date.

The Oceans Program helps to regenerate endangered marine ecosystems.

ecoSPIRITS recently joined forces with Bacardi Limited and Carnival Cruise Line in a partnership to deploy Ocean Conservation Edition ecoTOTEs containing Carnival’s house pour rum (BACARDÍ Superior rum) to three of Carnival’s ships operating from the Port of Miami in Florida. As part of this pilot collaboration, the partners are funding the ecoSPIRITS Oceans Program to remove one kilogram of waste for every ecoTOTE of Bacardi Superior Rum delivered to Carnival Cruise Line vessels.

Three Carnival Cruise Line ships are taking BACARDÍ Superior rum in Ocean Conservation Edition ecoTOTEs.

Guy Cawood, Founder, Green Steps Group

“It is a privilege to be a partner of ecoSPIRITS in their circular journey and creating positively regenerative products. Whether it be through creating positive environmental impact through recovering ocean-bound waste or recovering directly from the ocean, we seek action in the right areas and support the local communities while regenerating our amazing beaches and diverse marine life.”

Sui Ling Cheah, Executive Board Chair, ecoSPIRITS

Sui Ling Cheah, Executive Board Chair, ecoSPIRITS, said: “The ecoSPIRITS Oceans Program offers something different for our island markets, many of which are seeing the immediate impact of rising sea levels and have a particular focus on the protection of marine environments. We are grateful to Green Steps Group for helping create the ecoSPIRITS Oceans Program, so that we can jointly help venues with their ocean conservation efforts. The two ecoSPIRITS impact programs remain very popular with our brands, distributors, and venue partners.”

ecoSPIRITS offers its Climate Partners two impact programs: the ecoSPIRITS Oceans Program and the ecoSPIRITS Forest Program. The latter was set up to help ecoSPIRITS’ partner venues generate additional carbon mitigation beyond the substantial carbon footprint reduction from their use of low-waste, low-carbon spirits. Under the ecoSPIRITS Forest Program, one tree is planted for each cycle of an ecoTOTE through the ecoSPIRITS closed loop distribution platform. Every tree planted is geo-tagged and photographed in the name of the partner venue. Since the program’s launch in 2020, more than 44,000 trees have been planted, effectively mitigating more than 97,000 kg of CO2e annually in carbon emissions. This collaborative effort has also created 12,947 hours of community engagement, with 47% of engagement and employment opportunities going to female workers.

ecoSPIRITS and La Maison du Whisky Launch Circular Retail Concept for Premium Spirits in France

PARIS 15 December 2023 ecoSPIRITS France and La Maison du Whisky (LMDW) have launched a new circular retail initiative in France, offering a spirits refill solution for premium and exclusive spirits within the retail sector. This new initiative, marking the first time the ecoSPIRITS closed loop technology has been made available to retailers in Europe, has initially been introduced in select LMDW-owned retail outlets in the Paris region. It will later be made available to more than 100 spirits retail outlets supplied by LMDW across the country, before being offered to other off-trade retailers in France from early 2024. The programme features limited-edition spirit brands which have been produced specifically for the collaboration and which cannot be purchased in a traditional glass bottle format. The refill solution was developed in response to France’s anti-waste law ‘Loi AGEC’, which requires products to be accompanied by information about their sustainability and circularity.

Spirits are dispensed in-store to consumers via SmartPour 2.0S technology, with three bottles sizes to choose from.

The spirits will be delivered to the retailers in ecoTOTE™ format and dispensed in-store to consumers via SmartPour™ 2.0S technology. The units have been produced in a bronze colour to reflect the appearance of a copper pot still, specifically for the retail sector. Consumers can choose from three sizes of specially-branded reusable bottles: a 20CL tester size, 50CL or 70CL. They are encouraged to fill their own bottles with their chosen spirit directly from the SmartPour, and attach a label and bottle cap to complete the purchase. The wooden bottle cap is screen-printed with the ecoSPIRITS logo.

Consumers fill their own bottles directly from the SmartPour and attach a label and bottle seal.

The initial spirits taking part in this project are: Compass Box Synthesis (Blended Scotch Whisky), Christian Drouin Verger Sauvage gin, Renegade Hope rhum agricole, and Amorik single malt whisky. These have all been produced in small batches specifically for this project and when stocks run out, they will be replaced by new special release spirits, including seasonal variants.

The Retail Program Lineup

Compass Box Synthesis

The result of blending two single grain whiskies and two single malts from the Highlands and Speyside areas of Scotland. The blend evolves on the palate, with peat becoming more prominent, while herbaceous and fruity tones are also present.

Christian Drouin Verger Sauvage

A distilled gin from France, which has been inspired by a cider apple orchard. This natural, verdant environment is a world which led to the creation of Christian Drouin’s ‘Verger Sauvage”, made from apples, quinces and a wide variety of wildflowers.

Renegade Hope

This Rhum Agricole is made from pure sugarcane juice. It is a small batch blend of pot-still rums which is aged for 18 months in three different casks, new American oak, American first fill oak and French first fill oak. The flavours evolve elegantly, highlighting the controlled ageing process.

Amorik

Amorik Single Malt Whisky was created exclusively for LMDW at the brand’s Warenghem distillery, known for being a pioneering whisky-making site in France. This Spanish oak-aged Amorik ventures into bitter, fruity, malty, spicy and intensely chocolatey flavours.

Constance Moreau-Luchaire, Senior Marketing Manager & Project Management Officer, La Maison du Whisky

“In a retail setting, ecoSPIRITS will enable the offering of bulk spirits while placing at the core of the process: eco-responsibility, experimental elements, and very high-quality spirit in small batches.”

Iain McPherson, Sales Director, EMEA, ecoSPIRITS

“I am thrilled to see the launch of this retail campaign, which will provide discerning consumers across France the opportunity to purchase wonderful products and contribute to the circular economy. LMDW has worked with hundreds of on-trade venues in France to help them adopt ecoSPIRITS’ closed loop technology. And now, thanks to its hard work, the company – together with the ecoSPIRITS Product team – has developed a smart solution for the retail sector, which I am sure will intrigue and inspire customers across the country.”

The France retail collaboration forms part of ecoSPIRITS’ ongoing trials of circular solutions for the off-premise in the spirits industry. It follows the development of the SmartKiosk, which is an intelligent retail system, designed to tackle single use glass waste from at-home spirits consumption. The SmartKiosk, which is currently featuring in a pilot project in CS Fresh supermarket outlets in Singapore, allows consumers to securely refill spirits bottles in retail environments.

ecoSPIRITS Accelerates USA Expansion with Distributor Breakthru Beverage Group

MIAMI 6 December 2023 ecoSPIRITS USA has announced that Breakthru Beverage Group, one of the largest North American beverage alcohol distributors, has joined the ecoSPIRITS Climate Partner Program as an Official Distributor Partner. Breakthru distributes a diverse portfolio of brands across many territories in both the United States and Canada and it already has spirits brands ready to be deployed in ecoTOTE format in Florida, followed by California in the coming months. The partnership will also accelerate ecoSPIRITS USA’s expansion in the state, bringing new brand partners, venues and distribution resources to the circular economy.

The premium spirit brands Coconut Cartel rum and Barr Hill Gin will be the first from Breakthru’s portfolio to be distributed in ecoTOTE format to venues in Florida.

The United States is known for its three-tier system – comprising of producers, distributors and retailers – for distributing alcoholic beverages, which was set up after the repeal of Prohibition. The three-tier system mandates that producers can sell their products only to wholesale distributors who then sell to retailers (and bars and restaurants), and only the latter group can sell to consumers. Distributors therefore play an essential role in the market, and while they have no involvement in manufacturing, they act as the representatives of the brand and supplier in determining their route to market. There are around 4,000 beverage alcohol distributors in the United States, with the 10 largest controlling more than 72% of the market between them. The largest multi-state distributors – such as Breakthru – differ from each other by offering a combination of size, service and portfolio.

The state of Florida has the second largest market for beverage alcohol in the United States.

Breakthru is a family-owned and operated beverage alcohol wholesaler and is one of the top three alcohol beverage distributors in the United States. It has a diverse portfolio of more than 6,000 wine, spirits and beer brands from many of the industry’s leading suppliers. The company, which is headquartered in New York, operates in 45 facilities across North America – including Canada and 16 U.S. states such as Florida, California, Arizona and Illinois – and has more than 9,000 employees. Breakthru will begin by distributing premium rum brand Coconut Cartel and the award-winning, super premium Barr Hill Gin in ecoTOTE format to venues in Florida. The state has the second largest beverage alcohol markets in the United States, with more than 23 million 9-liter cases consumed in 2022. Other Breakthru brands will be made available in ecoTOTE format in the coming months.

Will Fulghom, Region President East US, Breakthru Beverage Group

“Breakthru is very excited to work with ecoSPIRITS as a pioneering distributor partner and reduce our single-use packaging in the Florida market. While it is up to all of us to protect our planet, we as distributors have a special responsibility to work with our supplier and customer partners to undertake such eco-friendly efforts across the industry. We are proud to work with Coconut Cartel and Barr Hill Gin on this climate-friendly venture.”

Coconut Cartel is a 100% pure Guatemalan añejo rum cut to proof with coconut water. The rum, which was first launched in 2012, is aged in new, charred American white oak barrels for four to 12 years, and cut to 80 proof with freshly harvested coconut water. It has tropical aromas of fresh coconut with hints of banana, mango and vanilla, and upon tasting, there are notes of plantain, caramel, sandalwood and burnt brown sugar.

Coconut Cartel is made from rum aged in new, charred American oak barrels, which is then cut to 80 proof with coconut water.

Mike Zig, Co-Founder, Coconut Cartel

“We’re grateful for the opportunity to be better and grow our brand with visionary partners like ecoSPIRITS and Breakthru. As an emerging brand, we are nimble and therefore we can quickly activate innovations such as ecoSPIRITS’ sustainable packaging technology and we hope to inspire more brands to join the movement to help eliminate single use glass waste in the spirits and wine industry.”

Barr Hill Gin is made using organic juniper and is finished with raw honey from the local area in Montpelier, Vermont. The gin is one of the most awarded gins in the U.S. The honey adds a light sweetness to the gin, which also has hints of vanilla, clove and cayenne.

Ryan Christiansen, Co-founder and President, Barr Hill Gin

“We’ve been cheering on the team at ecoSPIRITS, as they pioneer the enormous effort of eliminating single use packaging from the spirits industry. We’re honored to be invited to be a part of this important mission, and couldn’t be more excited to see Breakthru Beverage step up to the plate on behalf of our planet.”

Zdenek Kastanek, Managing Director, ecoSPIRITS USA

“At ecoSPIRITS, we are excited to have one of the national leaders in beverage distribution joining our efforts in transitioning the industry to circularity. With ecoSPIRITS’ technology integrating into Breakthru’s distribution network there will be a significant reduction in single use packaging ending up in the landfills of southern Florida or in carbon-intensive recycling facilities. The impact we can achieve together is exciting.”

Jessica Berry, Sales Director, North America, ecoSPIRITS

“I am thrilled to be taking my long-term working partnership with Breakthru to the next level and revolutionize the industry for a more green and sustainable future. Breakthru Beverage Group’s commitment to bringing closed loop packaging on board is sending a strong message that change is not only needed but it is possible, and easier than people think. I am proud to see the leadership at Breakthru commit to what we can do today for a better tomorrow.”

About Coconut Cartel

Coconut Cartel’s quality comes from decades of craftsmanship, fermentation and distilling methods, and a world-class aging house in Guatemala. Its innovation, however, is in the proprietary proofing process: Coconut Cartel’s rum distillate is aged in new, charred American White oak for up to 12 years. Instead of using filtered water to bring the cask strength rum down to bottle proof (40% ABV), fresh, locally sourced coconut water is used as the proofing agent. The natural minerals, sugars and salts found in coconut water smoothen the blend and add a unique viscosity to the rum, making it incredibly smooth and refreshing to sip. Coconut Cartel Special combines traditional, old school rum artistry and new school innovation. The result is truly one-of-a-kind rum that appeals to a wide spectrum of consumers.

Diageo Partners with ecoSPIRITS to Take Circular Spirits Packaging Global

LONDON 30 November 2023 Diageo and ecoSPIRITS have announced a global agreement for the distribution of a range of Diageo spirits brands in ecoSPIRITS’ circular packaging technology in an expected 18 markets over the next three years. Diageo’s commitment to broad deployment of a circular packaging format is the first of its kind in the spirits industry and forms part of its 10-year ESG action plan Society 2030: Spirit of Progress. As part of the new collaboration, Diageo spirit brands will be made available at participating bars, restaurants and hotels in ecoSPIRITS’ award-winning ecoTOTE format, starting with Smirnoff vodka, Captain Morgan rum, and Gordon’s gin. ecoSPIRITS is also investing in expanding its customer success resources to support the new collaboration, fielding an implementation team in London dedicated to supporting technology deployments in individual Diageo markets around the world.

Smirnoff vodka, Gordon’s gin and Captain Morgan rum will be the first brands to feature in the new collaboration.

As part of the new agreement, Diageo will have access to ecoSPIRITS’ circular packaging technology platform, including the ecoTOTE, SmartPour™ and CircularONE™ technologies. Diageo brands and local market affiliates will also have access to ecoSPIRITS’ global network of ecoPLANT™ processing sites, which are operated by its licensed operators in more than 25 countries around the world. The global agreement provides a flexible framework that allows individual Diageo markets to pilot and scale circular packaging as part of their local business development and sustainability plans.

Diageo first started working with ecoSPIRITS in 2021 through the Diageo Sustainable Solutions programme, which aims to find technology innovators that can bridge the innovation gap across Diageo’s supply chain to help the company reach its ESG targets. The partnership also aligns with Diageo’s Society 2030: Spirit of Progress plan and it is a step towards its goal of reducing carbon emissions across the supply chain by 50% by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2050.

Ewan Andrew, President, Global Supply Chain & Procurement and Chief Sustainability Officer, Diageo

“This is another example of a triple win where the planet, consumers and Diageo will all benefit. We will be able to reduce both carbon and cost and the pubs and bars will benefit from the ease of having reusable spirits packaging.”

The new global partnership builds on the successful ongoing pilot programme of the ecoSPIRITS technology by Diageo Indonesia that started in 2022. As part of this initiative, Smirnoff vodka is supplied in ecoTOTE format to 38 leading bars, restaurants and hotels in Bali and Jakarta. Diageo Indonesia also commissioned an ecoPLANT 2.0S to process and refill ecoTOTEs at its existing production facility in Bali. The local closed loop system has been operational for almost a year, generating positive feedback from outlet partners and consumers alike and confirming the commercial viability of circular packaging in the Indonesian market.

Atlas Beach Club, Jungle Fish and Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay are among the venues receiving Smirnoff vodka in ecoTOTE format in Indonesia.

Updating global supply chains to accommodate circular packaging formats is a complex endeavour, requiring a close working partnership between ecoSPIRITS and global customers like Diageo. To support the new partnership, and in response to continued growth in demand for circular packaging worldwide, ecoSPIRITS is expanding its London office with the appointment of additional customer success resources. ecoSPIRITS’ newly-appointed Senior Vice President, Customer Success, James Doyle, will lead global and regional teams supporting Diageo and its local market affiliates as they integrate ecoSPIRITS’ platform of ecoPLANT, ecoTOTE, SmartPour and CircularONE technologies into their local operations. The expanded London-based team will include global project and technical leads dedicated to supporting Diageo deployments under the new global agreement.

James Doyle, Senior Vice President, Customer Success, ecoSPIRITS

“We are delighted that our pilot collaboration with Diageo Indonesia has led to this new global agreement. Integrating a circular solution like ecoSPIRITS into existing supply chains is an exciting but complex challenge. Our team looks forward to working closely with Diageo’s teams around the world to make these new launches a resounding success. We are confident that Diageo’s iconic spirits brands will be welcomed in ecoTOTE format by venues and consumers across the world.”

Under the new partnership, Diageo’s spirit brands will be made available in ecoTOTE format at participating markets, with Gordon’s gin initially set to join Smirnoff vodka and Captain Morgan rum. In 2024, new Gordon’s gin co-branded editions of the ecoTOTE 3.0S and SmartPour 2.0S will join the existing Smirnoff vodka and Captain Morgan rum editions. Taken together, the selection of premium vodka, gin and rum offerings in circular packaging allows partnering bars, restaurants and hotels to reduce single use packaging waste and carbon footprint associated with some of their highest-volume pouring spirits.

New Gordon’s gin co-branded editions of the ecoTOTE 3.0S and SmartPour 2.0S will be introduced in 2024.

Paul Gabie, CEO, ecoSPIRITS

“ecoSPIRITS’ mission is to end single use glass in the spirits and wine industry. For the circular economy to achieve global scale, innovators like ecoSPIRITS need the support of industry leaders like Diageo in catalysing the linear to circular packaging transition. As such, this new global agreement is a significant milestone for ecoSPIRITS and our journey to a circular future. We are grateful to our partners at Diageo for the seriousness of their commitment to a more sustainable and inclusive world.”

More details of the companies’ collaboration plans, including initial market launches, will be announced in early 2024.  For media enquiries and general information please contact [email protected] or Jessica Hurford, Sustainability Communications Manager, Diageo, on [email protected] and Sonya Hook, Senior PR Manager, ecoSPIRITS, on [email protected].

ecoSPIRITS, Mancino and Proof & Company Launch First Vermouth in Circular Packaging

MELBOURNE 27 November 2023 ecoSPIRITS licensed operator Proof & Company has expanded its closed loop offering in Australia with the launch of the first vermouth to be available in ecoTOTE™ format. The move, which builds on a ten-year relationship between Proof & Company and Mancino Vermouth, a leading global craft vermouth brand, represents the first time a vermouth has been available in low carbon, low waste circular packaging. The partnership with Mancino Vermouth has been made possible with ecoSPIRITS’ new circular wine technology, which offers lifecycle preservation for wines and vermouth from production to point of service. Mancino Vermouth in ecoTOTE format is now available in the first Australian venues.

Mancino Vermouth is the first vermouth available in ecoTOTE format.

Mancino Vermouth was selected as the vermouth category launch partner for ecoSPIRITS’ circular packaging system. The brand, created by legendary Italian bartender, Giancarlo Mancino, is known for being a product of exceptional quality and refined character. Mancino is produced through the fortification of a delicate Trebbiano di Romana wine and the infusion of 38 aromatic herbs, resulting in a full-bodied 16% ABV vermouth. In 2021, the brand was acquired by The Lucano Group, the world renowned Italian amaro and spirits company.

Mancino Vermouth is made using the finest hand-picked spices and botanicals.

Vermouth is a fortified wine – part of the ‘aromatised’ wine family – and it is traditionally drunk as an aperitivo, before a meal. This botanical drink has been popular for many years in Italy, Spain and France, and in recent years this trend has spread to Australia. Popular in the bar world, Mancino Vermouth is often used as an ingredient for cocktails such as the Negroni, the Manhattan, martinis and summer spritzes. Leading Asia Pacific independent spirits distributor, Proof & Company, has been distributing Mancino Vermouth to bars, hotels and restaurants across Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and China for more than 10 years.

Vermouth is popular as a cocktail ingredient for drinks such as the Negroni and the Manhattan.

Mancino Vermouth is now available in the stone grey ecoTOTE 3.0W which forms part of ecoSPIRITS’ circular wine technology. The wine version of ecoSPIRITS closed loop system has been designed to eliminate single use glass, while also delivering hygiene, oxidation, temperature and ultraviolet light protection to wines and vermouth. Vermouth ecoTOTEs are processed at an ecoPLANT 2.0W, which has been upgraded to support bottling of wines and vermouths. The upgraded ecoPLANT generates high purity nitrogen gas for vermouth blanketing and preservation once in the ecoTOTE. Venues receiving their Mancino Vermouth in ecoTOTE format can refill branded Mancino bottles using a SmartPour™, in the same way that venues work with spirits in ecoTOTE format.

The first venues in the Australian cities of Melbourne and Sydney have already started receiving Mancino Vermouth in ecoTOTE format delivered by Proof & Company. Early Melbourne-based pioneers include Chinatown’s contemporary whisky and cocktail bar, One or Two Bar, and Continental Deli in Hawthorn. Meanwhile, Hilton Sydney’s Zeta Cocktail Bar is one of the early adopters of this technology in Sydney.

Hilton Sydney’s popular cocktail destination, Zeta Bar, is now taking Mancino Vermouth in ecoTOTE format.

Hayden Hughes, General Manager, Hilton Sydney (Zeta Cocktail Bar)

“Recently partnering with Mancino Vermouth and, in particular, Mancino in ecoSPIRITS form, aligns with Hilton’s 2030 sustainability goals, which (among other key targets) heroes the reduction of single use materials. At Hilton Sydney, our focus on sustainability is geared toward key areas such as waste management, water efficiency, use of eco-friendly materials and energy usage, and we are thrilled to now also be supporting the use of ecoSPIRITS on property.”

Giancarlo Mancino, Founder and Owner of Mancino Vermouth

I am very proud and excited to be a part of this collaboration with ecoSPIRITS. And being the first vermouth brand in the world to be low carbon and low waste is a step forward in making a difference to our footprint as a business. With ecoSPIRITS’ determination in driving the sustainability message I’m sure we shall all be a huge success, opening further doors in the future for a perfect, no nonsense alternative. Salute!

Vienna Thompson, Chief Marketing Officer, Proof & Company

“We’re thrilled that our long-term brand partner Mancino Vermouth joins forces with the ecoSPIRITS technology – this underscores our shared commitment for a future where spirit excellence meets environmental responsibility. And we’re extremely proud to be the first to launch this in the Australian market.”

James Wynn-Williams, ecoSPIRITS Sales Manager for Asia Pacific

“Aperitivo-style drinks are popular in Australia currently, and many of the country’s top cocktail bars are seeing good sales of cocktails such as Negronis, Vermouth Highballs and Spritzes, so by offering vermouth in ecoTOTE format Proof & Company can now help venues across Australia to dramatically reduce their single use glass bottle waste. We are delighted that the respected brand Mancino is now the world’s first vermouth in circular packaging.

ecoSPIRITS USA to Launch in Nevada, Starting With Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS 6 November 2023 eS Operator USA I LLC, ecoSPIRITS’ licensed operator for the United States, will launch closed loop spirits packaging service in Nevada, starting with Las Vegas, a city known for its high concentration of casinos, hotels and bars. As part of the Nevada launch, a new ecoPLANT, the third in the US market, will be brought online in partnership with 17A Stillery LLC,  a Las Vegas-based distillery. One of city’s largest casinos – South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa – will act as the launch customer in the state, piloting the closed loop spirits technology for high volume casino beverage operations. As part of the launch, ecoSPIRITS has also developed a new technology solution to make its award-winning ecoTOTE™ format compatible with back-of-house systems known as ‘pump rooms’, which are commonplace in the casino industry. The Nevada ecoPLANT will begin deploying spirits in ecoTOTE format from January 2024.

The ecoPLANT host for Nevada, 17A Stillery, produces City Light Shine, which is 100% distilled in Las Vegas from a traditional southern moonshine recipe using a whiskey-style mash to create moonshine in flavors such as blueberry and salted caramel. 17A Stillery was founded by Brendan Gaughan, whose family also owns the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa. The Gaughan family has operated and owned casinos in Las Vegas since the late 1940s; Brendan Gaughan is the grandson and son of Vegas gaming pioneers Jackie Gaughan and Michael Gaughan. The South Point casino is one of Las Vegas’s busiest resorts, boasting a 64-lane bowling center, 16-theatre movie complex, 600-seat bingo hall, 11 restaurants and six bars. The South Point is also home to the country’s largest indoor equestrian center with a 4,400-seat arena and more than 1,300 indoor, climate controlled horse stalls. The South Point will be the first hospitality venue in Nevada to take delivery of spirits in ecoTOTE format, starting in January 2024, with others set to join shortly after.

17A Stillery, which is famous for producing City Light Shine, is the host company for the Nevada ecoPLANT.

The South Point is situated on Las Vegas Boulevard, just a few miles south of the famous Las Vegas Strip, a stretch of the Boulevard known for its high concentration of resort hotels and casinos. The Strip is home to many of the largest hotel, casino and resort properties in the world, establishing it as one of the most popular and iconic tourist destinations globally and one of the driving forces for Las Vegas’s economy. The hotel casino properties are known for their contemporary architecture, lights and wide variety of attractions and in recent years resorts have trended towards the luxurious high end segment, including high end dining, nightclubs and cocktail bars.

The South Point Hotel, Casino & Resort is one of Las Vegas’s busiest resorts.

Although the Las Vegas Strip has elaborate neon lighting displays, many of the hotel resort properties have made extensive sustainability efforts, including water conservation, recycling, waste reduction and energy efficiency programs. Renewable energy is generated and used on the Strip, while energy efficient buildings are also being implemented and this area has one of the highest concentrations of LEED-certified buildings in the world. The South Point casino is among those with sustainability high up on its agenda and its efforts include a focus on reducing water, waste and energy usage. By taking delivery of spirits in ecoTOTE format, The South Point will help demonstrate the benefits of reducing single use glass waste in Las Vegas on a large commercial scale.

The Las Vegas Strip has elaborate displays but also one of the highest concentrations of LEED-certified buildings in the world.

As part of the new partnership, ecoPLANT No. 30 will be located in a dedicated production and warehouse facility to be operated by 17A Stillery, with distillery production staff trained and supported by ecoSPIRITS’ global Circular Operations team.

The ecoPLANT for Nevada will be located in a production facility operated by 17A Stillery.

To support the casino industry in Nevada, ecoSPIRITS has worked with The South Point to develop a technology extension that makes its ecoTOTE format compatible with casino back-of-house systems for house pour spirits known informally as ‘pump rooms.’ These systems allow high volume beverage operations to efficiently dispense house spirits in ‘draft’ form on the casino floor; however, the high volume of spirits poured make these operations a major source of single use glass waste. By integrating a circular packaging solution into existing casino beverage systems, ecoSPIRITS can help operators eliminate nearly all of the packaging waste generated by their highest volume house pour spirits.

The ecoSPIRITS technology has been upgraded to suit back-of-house casino pump rooms.

Brendan Gaughan, Owner of The South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa and Founder of 17A Stillery

“We are delighted that South Point Casino, Hotel & Spa will be the first venue in Las Vegas to work with ecoSPIRITS and we hope this paves the way for venues across the city to follow suit, so that we can work together to eliminate single use glass waste. We are also excited about 17A Stillery acting as the host facility for ecoSPIRITS’ ecoPLANT in Nevada, we are certain this site will become very busy very soon, as more venues look to make the transition to circular packaging technology for spirits.”

Zdenek Kastanek, Managing Director, ecoSPIRITS USA

“ecoSPIRITS USA is focusing on expanding into high-consumption states where we can make a major difference in reducing single use glass waste. This not only represents our third ecoPLANT activation, but also an important move for the business in being able to tackle the all-important casino segment, following our recent move into the cruise industry. We are delighted to have found the perfect host partner and site in Las Vegas for our Nevada ecoPLANT. 17A Stillery and the Gaughan family bring invaluable expertise and knowledge, not only about the spirits market, but also the casino industry and the Las Vegas hospitality segment. We are looking forward to getting started together!”
